Hidden Treasure and Pearl

First of all, thank You God for Your wonderful grace in revealing Your love for me through Your Son Jesus Christ. Thank You also for people like my 'Big Brother' Andrew, The 2 Noels, Beth, Ernest and the rest of the prayer group, Rick and the MYAFers and my lovely sweetheart May Lee, that have encouraged and helped me tremendously in my walk with God and in finding Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior.

I will start blogging in a new site soon at knowingjesuschrist.blogspot.com. Consider this as a new season in my walk with God and my renewed desire to really know Jesus personally. There are nothing more important to me than this at the moment. God has been reminding me a lot lately on Matthew 6:33 and today on The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl from Matthew 13:44-46 (Thanks Andrew!).

The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it." - Matthew 13:44-46

Dear Father, thank You for Your mercy to forgive me when I'm fallen short of Your glory and Your grace for giving me the faith to always hold on to You. Thank You for answering my prayer for strength to continue running this race and renewing my desire to follow Christ even more closely. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

The Pretender

Read Genesis 27:19-33

Reflection of Tommy:

Like Jacob, we too sometimes pretend who we are not in order to gain approval from others. On the surface, we seem to be 'holy' and right- having it all together, but in the inside we are a broken soul with fear, insecurity, doubt and persistently falling into sin.

We should stop lying to others and also ourselves by pretending, but to confess honestly to God and be truly repented from them. We need to take a first and firm step to seek God and His righteousness.

Through the work of the Spirit in us, God can change us from within to be a genuine person who He intends us to be.

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me to take a firm stand in being a faithful follower of Christ; not just through words but also in action. Help me to see things in Your way and give me a willing and humble heart to change and be more like Christ each day. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

The Good Life

Read Luke 12:13-21

"Beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses." — Luke 12:15

Reflection of Tommy:

Today's passage reminded us of the danger to rely and trust solely on worldly possessions for security and happiness. It is shortsighted for us to concentrate only in seeking to be rich and fulfilled by more and more of these perishable things, while neglecting our focus in finding the richness of God that lasts forever.

Dear Father, thank You that I can trust in You to provide for all that I need. Teach me to be content with what I have and be grateful for all that You’ve blessed me with. I pray that I’ll be generous and compassionate in giving back to others who are in needs in return. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

The Great Pandemic

Read Numbers 21:1-9

"Even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." — John 3:14-15

Reflection of Tommy:
Few years ago, a pastor from another church came to my church for a healing session. It was a packed room with so many who came hoping to be healed. Most heard about how gifted and powerful this pastor is in healing. But later, before he begin his sermon, he reminded those who came that any healing that will takes place comes not from him but from God alone. The power of healing comes when we believe in Jesus and what He has done for us on the Cross.

Jesus brought the complete and fuller meaning to the story of Moses’ bronze snake in today’s passage centuries later in John 3:14-15. It was not the bronze snake that healed the Israelites, but their belief that God could heal them when they obey God’s instructions. In the same way, all of us can be saved from the sickness of sin by looking to Jesus’ death on the Cross.

Dear Father, thank You for sending Your only Son to die for us on the Cross that whoever believe in Him will have eternal life (John 3:16). Teach me to be faithful to You always, obeying Your commands and always be thankful for everything You’ve done for me. Lord, keep my eyes focus unto Jesus as I walk closer to know Him and Your will for my life. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Minister for God

Read 2 Corinthians 6:1-13

"We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not be discredited." - 2 Corinthians 6:3

Reflection of Tommy:

When I was young, I was against everything Christianity and in fact disgusted by Christians. This has a lot to do with a Christian neighbor of mine, whose behavior and actions painted a very negative picture of what Christianity and Christians are all about to me.

In today’s passage Paul talks about each one of us is a minister for God to the world. In verse 3, he said that we should be careful not to put any stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Each day in every situation, we need to be aware that non-Christians around us do observe us. From the way we talk to the words we use to the things we do, let them not be another person’s excuse for rejecting Christ.

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me my role as a minister for You to the world. Thank You for showing me that in everything I do, to consider what my actions communicate about Jesus Christ to others. I pray You will lead me to be a better witness for Christ in everything I do. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Freedom from Idols

Read Isaiah 31

"Return to him you have so greatly revolted against, O Israelites. For in that day every one of you will reject the idols of silver and gold your sinful hands have made." - Isaiah 31:6-7

Reflection of Tommy:
If we were to examine our lives closely, chances are we will find ourselves ‘enslaved’ in one way or another to some form of idols, that seem exciting and can fulfill us much. Idols like money, fame and success often rob us of our time, energy and devotion that ought to be directed to God and our freedom to be who God wanted us to be.

We should ask God to help us reexamine our lives, identifying areas and things that consume a lot of our time and energy, not contributing to our spiritual development and constantly hindering our closer walk with God. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we’ll be able to break free from the grip of these worthless idols and begin realigning our lives to where God wanted us to be.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me the worthlessness of those idols in my life. Teach me to use my time and energy wisely for things that matters most. Teach me also not to repeat the same mistake of bypassing You or Your previous directions to me when searching for help to problems in my life (v1).

Lord, in all things, lead me not to serve only my own interest but Yours. Make me genuine in devoting my all to You and to grow each day to be more like Christ. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Better Yet!

Read Philippians 1:19-26

"Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." - Philippians 1:19-21

Reflection of Tommy:

Recently, I posted a question online asking friends what they would do if they know they'll be dead in 2 hours. It was interesting to see how each person responded differently to that question.

There are many of us going through our lives daily with plans and pursuits that we never really think or ponder over question like this. We may either believe it will never happen to us (or not that soon), or we dread thinking of the finality that death has over us.

But as we read today's passage, we see how Apostle Paul has a very different perspective on death. He said that to live is Christ and to die is gain (v21). He sees dying as something that is even better than living because he can finally see Jesus face to face, be truly free from pain and suffering and have the ultimate fellowship with God and be united with other believers for eternity.

But this does not means that we should concentrate solely on leaving this world and neglect all the things God has entrusted us to do here. Paul said to live is Christ, meaning we should fulfill God's will for our lives here by making good of every opportunities we have to serve Jesus- sharing the Good News, serving and reaching out to others with love; be a good steward to everything God has blessed us with and be the salt of the earth and light of the world.

Dear Father, thank You because of Christ, I will have no fear of death but the hope of something better when I leave this world. Let me hold unswervingly to this hope I profess, as You are faithful (Hebrews 10:23).

Father, guide me while I am still here through the Holy Spirit to never cease seeking You and Your righteousness. Teach me how I can serve Jesus better and asking Him to be true Lord of everything in my life.

Lord, remind me always my duty and responsibilities to be a good steward for all the things You have entrusted me with in this world. Teach me also to have a genuine servanthood heart to reach out and serve those in needs, reflecting Christlike love and compassion. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Boundaries

Read Jeremiah 5:20-29

"Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good." - Jeremiah 5:25

Reflection of Tommy:

There are many time that I've seen people ridicule, criticize and even scorn certain teachings in Christianity. 'Boundaries' revealed by God in issues like idol worship, profanity, homosexuality, extramarital affair, premarital sex and abortion are often wrongly seen as unnecessary man-made rules that block, hinder and restrict the human freedom to enjoy what they want and when they want them.

But in Jeremiah 5:25, we see how God warns that when we ignore and violate these boundaries by sinning, we will withhold good from ourselves. As we are free-will beings, God allows us the freedom to choose between right and wrong. Because He loves us so much, He shows those boundaries to guide and lead us away from things that may bring harm and negative consequences into our lives. It is our responsibility to make the right choice based on these boundaries that God has lovingly and kindly set before us.

Dear Father, thank You for Your grace, mercy and love to reveal all the wonderful truths in Your Word to me - truths that protects and saves me from unnecessary headache, trouble and given me true freedom to be who You intended me to be.

Lord, thank You for constantly reminding me of my wrong ways and leading me back to You and Your righteousness. Forgive me for being a slow learner of Your Word, my lack of faith in what You and the power of the Spirit can do in changing me to be more like Christ each day.

Abba Father, I pray that You will draw me nearer and closer to You daily with reading and meditating of Your Word, listening to Your soft voices through my quiet time and praying to You in all things, presenting all my requests to You with thanksgiving. In the Name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Bearing in Love

Read Ephesians 3:14-4:3

"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." - Ephesians 4:2-3

Reflection of Tommy:

As Christians we are not entirely free from disagreement and even argument with other believers. We may be trying our best to be loving, sincere and caring to others, but we do at times struggle to keep our temper and be patient and gentle to those who irritate and annoy us. Sometimes we are also saddened by the things others do and words they have said about us. People, even our own brother and sister in Christ, may hurt and bring us down.

But we need not to burn in anger and harbor resentment towards them. Instead, we should first know how deeply God loves us (v18-19). We need to allow our minds to be transformed and renewed by His love. We need to see how Jesus himself demonstrated this love for His enemies, with true grace and mercy. This enables us to truly look pass what others have done to us, not repaying evil with evil or insult with insult (1 Peter 3:9) but with good, patience and gentleness reflecting God's love in us (Matthew 5:16).

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me about patience and gentleness today. Thank You for revealing to me how amazing and great Your love is for me. Forgive me of doubting Your love and care for me when I can't truly see how You works all things for good for those who love You.

Father, I pray that You'll lead and guide me to forgive, be patient and gentle always towards others. I pray that You'll continue to change me to be who You wanted me to be, pleasing in Your sight and to shine for You in the world around me. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Training for Life

Read 1 Timothy 4:1-11

"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." - 1 Timothy 4:8

Reflection of Tommy:

There are many skills, like in sports, that need proper, rigorous and constant training. One will not excel unless they invest time, energy and full concentration in it. It requires also discipline and commitment from the person.

As physical training is important in helping us to be good in certain sports, our training in righteousness deserves our utmost attention and priority as it helps us in every aspects of our lives (v8).

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me to work out my salvation (Phil. 2:12-13) as the Day is approaching. Thank you for the freedom in all that I received from You with thanksgiving (v4). I pray that You will renew my faith and enable me through the Holy Spirit to diligently seek You and Your righteousness. In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.

He Answers

Read Psalm 86:1-7

"In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me." - Psalm 86:7

Reflection of Tommy:

Sometimes, we wonder whether God will answers us when we do earnestly pray to Him. I've seen Him answering my prayers in simple things like fixing the audiovisual glitches for my church presentation today or getting help from a stranger when my car broke down at nowhere yesterday to other things like providing me wisdom and discernment in decision making or protection from physical or spiritual harm daily.

Like our earthly father, God always wants to give the best in everything, and at times we do need to ask Him to give us the patience for unanswered prayers or strength when He allows us to go through seemingly unfair or difficult situation in our lives.

If we truly and closely abide in Him, obeying His commands, we need not to worry for any storm that may hits our lives. God who is loving, faithful, good and merciful will always forgive, guard and brings true joy into our lives when we sincerely devoted to Him (v2).

Father, thank You for teaching me to draw close to You daily, to be renewed by Your life-changing Word. Help me to learn how to focus and surrender my life to Jesus.

Lord, give me strength and good rest everyday that I may not grow weary or distracted by the things of the world. Instead, give me a willing and joyful heart to seek You first and Your righteousness, knowing clearly You will provides all that I need. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Two Kingdoms

Read Matt 22:15-22

Reflection of Tommy:

They say there are two things that are certain we can't run from in this life - death and taxes. We often have various reasons or excuses for not paying the amount of taxes we should be paying. Some even justified their action by thinking that they shouldn't cooperate with human authority but only to God.

But Jesus in today's passage clearly explained that each of us should fulfill both our duty as citizen of this world and at the same time giving God our full commitment and obedience. But among the two kingdoms, our greater responsibility was to God and His kingdom (Acts 5:28-29).

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that I should render to authority all that are theirs and to You what is yours. While I am still a citizen to this world, teach me to carry out all duty and responsibility honestly to those You have allowed to govern the country.

Dear Father, but above all, made my heart knows that You have the ultimate authority and that I should devote my life honoring You and doing Your will. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Living For God Today

Read James 4:13-17

Reflection of Tommy:

As I was sharing with some friends about how busy I was lately with plans and works, I realized, as what James said in today’s passage, I don’t even know what will happen tomorrow. I asked whether I am living each day for God or only for myself. Will I fulfill God’s plan for me if I were to leave this world tomorrow?

Life is short and fragile. Like a mist in the morning that appears for a little while and vanishes into the air (v14). Let not live our life thinking we have lots of remaining time to live for Christ, to enjoy our loved ones or to do what we know we should. Instead, live for God today; living and doing everything in His will, not ours (v15).

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me once more to seek You and Your righteousness first before everything else as the Day is approaching. Thank You for the guidance from the Spirit, leading me in fulfilling Your plan for me; doing everything for Your honor and glory. I pray that I will continue to hold unswervingly to the hope I profess, for You are faithful, and considering how I may spur my brothers on towards love and every good deeds.

The New Man

Read Ephesians 4:17-32

Reflection of Tommy:

How do we truly put off our old self (v22) and to have our minds renewed (v23), putting on a new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness (v24)? In today's passage, we can learn some ways to live a changed life as a disciple of Christ.

1. Be truthful all the time (v25)
2. Control your anger (v26)
3. Be hardworking, not idling or dishonest (v28)
4. Serve those in need (v28)
5. Use words that build others up (v29)
6. Not grieving the Spirit with our disobedience (v30)
7. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander (v31)
8. Be compassionate to one another (v32)
9. Forgiving each other (v32)

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me again the difference between the nature of my old self and the powerful transformed life by the Spirit. Teach me to surrender and submit to You daily and diligently. Give me wisdom and discernment in all things that I may truly live for You, fulfilling the will You have for my life. In Jesus' precious Name I pray, Amen.

Sing!

Read 1 Chronicles 16:23-27

"Sing psalms to Him; talk of all His wondrous works!" —1 Chronicles 16:9

Reflection of Tommy:

At times, life's cruel and unforgiving circumstances rob us from the joy and peace we have in God. It's hard to sing praises and be thankful when everything around us doesn't seems to turn out the way we wanted them to be. We questioned why God allows these things to happen and not sparing us from the pain of going through them.

As we reflect on today's passage, we see how we can still give praise to our God during difficult times. Because of what He has done for us through His Son, we can always proclaim the good news and have the reason to be thankful and grateful for despite the circumstances in our lives.

Dear Father, thank You for Your grace and mercy that I can have a close personal relationship with You. Forgive me of my disobedience and slow in listening and learning Your ways. Forgive me also of not being sensitive in allowing the Holy Spirit to work in me, changing me to be more like Christ each day.

Father, I pray that You will change this heart of mine, make it truly repented of my old ways, and resubmit my all to You. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Don’t Row

Read Ephesians 3:14-21

"That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man." —Ephesians 3:16

Reflection of Tommy:

Very often we underestimate and doubt how God can helps us in our trials. Instead of seeking Him, we often rely on our own strength and ways to resolve issues in our lives.

Without God's guiding hands and wisdom, very likely we'll fail in finding the best solution for our problem and things can get worst due to our hastiness and self-centeredness. Paul in today's passage urged believers to seek God's strength in dealing with every obstacles we may face in life. Also, by knowing God personally, trusting His unchanging love and faithfulness for us, we can be strengthen in times of difficulties and hardship.

Dear Father, thank You for reassuring me that You will always be there beside me when I remain in You and Your words. Teach me to be more sensitive to Your calling for me, that I may always bring all the glory and honor to You. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

The Gravity of Sin

Read 2 Chronicles 34:14-21

Reflection of Tommy:

Nowadays, no one is safe or protected from the influence of immoral worldview ideas that bombard us constantly from television, film, music, newspapers, magazines, books, etc. Sadly, as they are so appealing to the desires of the flesh, many unknowingly incorporate them into their own personal worldview. Very often we see how people making excuses for sinning, blaming others, and treating it lightly.

We know God does not and never take sin lightly; He even sacrificed His one and only Son to redeem us from the penalty of sin! Instead of pretending that our sin is nothing or not such a "big deal", we should start taking it and God's commands seriously; knowing how severely it can affect us and others. Seek God's Word daily and diligently, asking the guidance and help of the Holy Spirit for wisdom and discernment.

Dear Father, thank You for constantly revealing to me my ways that are wrong and against Your will and plan for me. Teach me to be sensitive to Your voices through reading of Your Word, faithful friends You brought into my life and the works of the Holy Spirit in me. I pray I will have a willing heart to obey and be firm in my commitment to follow Christ wholeheartedly. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

The Preciousness of Friends

Read Mark 2:1-12

Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." - Mark 2:4-5

Reflection of Tommy:

The story of how Jesus heals a paralyzed man in Mark often points us to the power of Christ to forgive sin. But, there is another great lesson we can learn from it. We see how the paralytic was blessed with compassionate friends of faith. Without their great effort to assist a friend, the paralytic would never be able to come to Jesus for healing.

As God has brought many friends to us in His church, are we ready to assist and serve them in time of need. Can they rely on our faith? And, if we have been blessed with kind and compassionate friends with faith, do we respect and appreciate their guidance and help for us.

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me to hold unswervingly to the hope I profess and consider how I may spur one another toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:23-24). I pray that I will continue to allow myself to be guided by the Holy Spirit, to live my life as Your children of light; that my brothers who are in need can trust and rely on my faith. I pray also that I will truly appreciate those friends with faith You have brought into my life. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Abide in Him

Read John 15:9-17

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." - John 15:9-11

Reflection of Tommy:

The Holy Spirit often convicts us when we ignore God’s commands. We will feel as if God has hid His face and block us from receiving joy and peace from the relationship we used to have with Him.

To have lasting and complete joy in our lives, both in good and bad times, we need to have a consistent, personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ. As the today’s passage says, we can be filled and remain in the love and joy of Jesus when we genuinely seek and obey the Father’s commands (v10).

Dear Father, thank You for filling me with the Spirit; guiding me and leading me to Your truth, wisdom and righteousness. Lord, I pray that whatever I do, I do it for Your glory and honor, and not my own. Teach me to truly abide in You and Your Words remain in me always. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Ambassadors for Christ

Read 2 Corinthians 5:12-21

Reflection of Tommy:

We are the ambassadors for Christ, to be a good witness, testifying and reconciling people to God. We are responsible to reflect the amazing love of God for everyone through His one and only Son, Jesus Christ.

How can we be an effective ambassador for Christ? As we acknowledge that we are in Christ, we need to know that we are a new creation (v17). By taking the first step humbly submitting to God, we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, changing us to be a better witness for Christ.

Dear Father, thank You for Your amazing love for me that You sacrificed Your one and only Son to save and reconcile with a sinner like me. Father, I confess that I have not love You and my neighbors as You have commanded me. Forgive me I pray, lead me to true repentance and commit my life fully into Your mighty hands. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Getting Personal

Read 1 Corinthians 1:18-25

Reflection of Tommy:

What does it means to have a personal relationship with God? There are usually two extremes in where our relationship with God is, it is either we spend so much time accumulating knowledge and human wisdom that we have never truly know Him personally or we put Him second after other things or people in our lives.

But as we read today's passage, we learn that knowing Christ personally is the single greatest wisdom anyone could have. Are we ready and willing to wisely accept this offer from God today? Are we able to set aside all our other temporal pursuits and truly come to the crucified and risen Christ, receiving eternal life and joy of a personal relationship with Him.

Dear Father, thank You for reminding the unimaginable importance of having a close and personal relationship with Jesus. Thank You that You revealed to me that Christ is my Lord and Savior (Matthew 16:15-17). Father, lead me to live a life that fully reflects this reality, to be transformed by the renewing of my mind in Christ Jesus. In His mighty Name I pray, Amen.

Job’s Birthday

Read Job 3

"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me". - Mark 8:34

Reflection of Tommy:

Contrary to what many may believe, God does not remove all our trials, problems, and difficulties in life when we become Christian. In fact, it will be just the opposite! But, like Job in today's passage, God at times allows sufferings to come into our lives when He can brings greater good from them (Romans 8:28).

As we are willing to take up our cross and to go through them patiently, we will see how God can use our suffering to do amazing works for His kingdom and to those around us, and at the same time, changing and refining our character in the process.

Dear Father, thank You for teaching me the greater significance of our sufferings. Thank You that You'll never allow us to be tested beyond what we can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13 ). Thank You for changing me and refining me each day to be more like Christ. Lord, I pray that I will truly take up my cross and follow You. May everything I say and do bring all glory and honor to You. In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.

Anywhere With Jesus

Read Exodus 33:12-17

"Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" - Hebrews 13:5-6

Reflection of Tommy:

It's hard at times to know and experience God's presence with us when we face dreadful and frightening circumstances in our lives. But as we read the countless verses in the bible, we can take comfort knowing our faithful and loving Father will indeed be presence with us at all the time and in every imaginable circumstances. Not only that, He has also promised to help and provide us refuge and strength to go through them (Psalm 46:1).

Dear Father, thank You and I praise You for being there with me always, protecting and caring for someone so unworthy of Your love. Thank You for Your forgiveness and mercy despite my constant lack of obedience and zeal to commit my life fully and truly to You.

Lord, teach me to submit my all to You, earnestly seek You and Your righteousness first above all things. Guide me to be willing to be changed and refined each day by You; working out Your plan and will in me. In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.

Doing What’s Right

Read Psalm 15

"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." - James 1:5

Reflection of Tommy:

Very often, the decisions and choices that we need to make are not as clear as black and white. We face difficulty to truly discern and know the right thing to do in a situation. To make matter worst, we receive all kinds of contradicting opinions and thoughts from others.

But, as we look up to God's Word in James 1:5, God has promised to help us in this aspect of life. Books like Proverbs, for example, are packed with wisdom from God to guide and lead us to make wiser decisions in life. It was written in such a simple but powerful way that anyone who truly seeks the counsel from God will understand it.

So, whenever we are troubled by not knowing what to do, spend time reading His Word slowly and prayerfully, He will generously show you the way.

Dear Father, thank You for teaching me that knowledge without wisdom is folly. Thank You that Your Word is the lamp to my feet and the light for my path. Thank You for the guidance it gives when decisions have to be made and also the strength and encouragement when times are hard.

Lord, I pray that I will continue to be diligent in seeking Your Word, applying them to my life and sharing them to those around me. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

The Planting

Read 1 Corinthians 15:42-53

"We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed." —1 Corinthians 15:51

Reflection of Tommy:

Recent statistic shows that most healthy men will lives up to 71 years old while women 76 years old. Our body and its functions will deteriorates as we grow older each year. And there is absolutely nothing that we can do to stop this natural process. We may slow it down but eventually our current earthly body will fails.

Apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthian church described vividly how and what will happen when we as believer dies. Instead of being fearful of aging, it gives us the hope and confidence that we will be raised just like Christ when we die and be given a new 'incorruptible' and glorified body (v52).

Dear Father, thank You for the victory we have over death through Christ. Thank You for the promised renewed, changed and glorified body like Jesus when He returns. Keep my heart and mind always on the things that are eternal and to walk ever closely to You daily. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Getting Through

Read Psalm 46

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1

Reflection of Tommy:

I was asking a friend about what’s the worst that can ever happen to her? I asked whether it is death. But, she answered death in fact is less dreadful than other problems in life. No wonder many take their own life as a way out when life is so hard to bear. Of course, taking our own life is a sin and as Christian we know there is a better way out.

While reading Psalm 46, the psalmist talked exactly the same fear and overwhelming anxiousness (v2-3) when facing the challenges in life. In here, we learned few great God’s promises for us when things go really awry and unbearable for us. God will always be there with us (v11), He will be our true refuge- providing us the strength to endure and persevere (v1).

Dear Father, thank You for Your presence, You strength, protection and help when the going get tough. Teach me to seek You each day in prayer, reading and meditating on Your Word and applying them in my life. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

My Prince

Read Ephesians 5:22-33

Reflection of Tommy:

In a marriage, men were called to be spiritual head of the family and wives to willingly submit and follow his leadership in Christ. But, this does not mean men can misuse his authority and exploit the submission of his wife.

Instead, men who are leading the family should put aside his own interests to care for his wife. Like Christ, who served His disciples to the point of washing their feet, men are to serve their wife with respect and love. True spiritual leadership always involves service.

Dear Father, thank You for teaching me to be willing to sacrifice everything for my loved one; to make sure her well-being and happiness of primary importance and to care for her as I care for my own body. I pray that I’ll be a wise and Christ-honoring husband one day. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Will Work For Friends

Read Acts 4:32-37



Reflection of Tommy:

I was truly amazed by the sight of more than 13,000 Christians gathered in the stadium for the Prayer Convention last week. Another thing more amazing was how smoothly the whole event went; the Holy Communion for the entire 13,000 attendees took less than 20min; service conducted simultaneously in 4 different languages!, no traffic jam or other bad incidence. I believe all these were due to the united chain prayer by members of churches for the last whole month.

Today’s passage touches on the importance of spiritual unity in the family of Christ. As Jesus the head of the church, we the members of His body should be constantly united in loyalty, commitment and love for God and His Word. And through gathering like those in the convention, our churches may grow, survive and move toward greater unity.

Dear Father, thank You for the fruitful, eye-opening and memorable session between communities of believers last week. Thank You for Your protection and power working throughout during the entire duration of the convention. May we united more closely spiritually as brothers and sisters in Christ, being generous and loving in serving and caring for one another. May the churches and its members continue to grow and thrive in the work for Your kingdom. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Quiet, Please

Read 1 Kings 19:1-12

Reflection of Tommy:

Our impatience and lack of trust in God, often push our time with God below other to-do items in our days. Coupled with the constant noises and distractions that we allowed to surround us, we'll eventually find ourselves drifted so far from God that we hardly remember who He is and how much we need Him.

If we said we are willing to be an obedient follower of Christ, we need to make the decision to stop ourselves from being constantly preoccupied by the noise of the crowd. By taking time for God, we will soon understand the important truth and meaning of communicating with the God who cares for us.

Dear Father, thank You for teaching me to tone down the noises around me and begin giving main priority for my quiet time with You. Lead me to have an open heart, to listen, learn and accept the truth and teachings of Christ. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

The Bug Zoo

Read Acts 4:32-37

Reflection of Tommy:

At times we feel inadequate, insignificant or unimportant in God's works for His people. But as we read the Proverbs today, we know that God can display His marvelous wisdom and greatness in each of us if we were to humbly ask for them. And when we do, God can use our unique strength and gifts for the extension of His Kingdom.

In Galatians 6:9-10, the Apostle Paul tells us, "And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while we have opportunity let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith."

Dear Father, thank You that I'm complete and whole in You. Thank You for your gift for me to serve and minister to Your people. Guard my heart and mind that I will not grow weary and lose heart in doing good, especially in serving and loving those You have brought into my life. May my every word and action bring all glory and honor to You. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Refusing Help

Read 2 Kings 5:9-14

Reflection of Tommy:

Many dislike the idea that they need help or that to humbly seek the advice of others. Like Naaman in today's passage, our ignorance and self-sufficiency often shut the door on a much-needed help for us. We tend to be quick in brushing off any advices that call us to change or improve the way we do things.

We must avoid this by first having a humble heart - willing and open to listen; to think of others more highly than you think of yourself. By taking this first step, we give ourselves the opportunity to be truly helped by those God has sent to us.

Dear Father, thank You for your reminder on being open to listen and accept advice from those You have sent to me. Teach me to pray for Your Word to be always in my heart and mind- teaching me, rebuking me, correcting me and training me in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Where Was God?

Read Hebrews 13:5-8

Reflection of Tommy:

I read an interview of a famous writer awhile ago on why he's an atheist. He referred to the 9/11 incidence and the innocent lives that were lost in the tragedy, that he was convinced that day that God does not exists. But as we read Hebrews 13:5, God Himself has promised that He will never leave nor forsake us.

In times of tragedy, we can still experience God's invisible presence with the suffering and the dying in the compassionate individuals, volunteers, communities, hospital, churches and schools giving aids in the crisis. Despite all that may happen, we can know and trust that God is always near; working out all His plan and purposes.

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me of Your presence with me all the time. Thank You that even the very hairs of my hairs are all numbered by You (Luke 12:7); that I do not have to be afraid but to trust in Your providence and protection and to obey in Your commands.

Loving Father, I pray that I'll be a good witness for Christ to those around me. Keep my ways blameless and pleasing to You always. In Jesus' Mighty Name I pray, Amen.

No Record Of Our Sins

Read Psalm 130

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." - Romans 8:1

Reflection of Tommy:

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). So, are we forever trapped in endless and futile loops of earning God's approval and acceptance with our own strength? Are we hoping and wishing we'll be good enough to be able to eventually rest ourselves in a 'better' place when we die? There is neither certainty nor clarity. Neither hope nor assurance.

But, as Christian, we know that there will be no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). Because God loves us so much, He offers us a way through our genuine faith in His Son, that we will be assured 100% to be redeemed from all our iniquities (Psalm 130:8) and to be reconciled with Him again even if we were to die tomorrow. No ambiguity. No uncertainty.

Dear loving Father, thank You for the certainty and confidence I have in You through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for Your love, grace and mercy- to forgive me of all my iniquities and justified freely through the redemption that came by Christ (Romans 3:24).

Father, teach me to be an obedient follower of Christ, having Him not only as my Savior but also as the Lord of everything in my life. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Visible Reminders

Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9

There are few verses I memorized by hard in the Bible. There are not some magical mantra but they help me in remembering God's promises and His encouragement for my steps of obedience to Him.

Dear Father, thank You for Your Word that guide and lead my ways. Forgive me of not being diligent and obedient in seeking Your Word closely. Lord, lead me to take time each day to read, study and meditate on Your Word. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

The Lingo

Read 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

"I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some." —1 Corinthians 9:22

Reflection of Tommy:

I was amazed by a friend’s enthusiasm to find various ways to show God’s love to her relatives and friends. She displays her selflessness and genuine compassion towards them by going the extra miles to serve and getting herself into their ‘worlds’ and speaking their ‘languages’. As I looked back at myself, I felt ashamed by my lack of eagerness and zeal to even look for opportunity to share the Good News with those around me.

Similarly, the apostle Paul in today’s passage was willing to be flexible in his ministry by adapting into the ‘languages’ of people he was reaching out to. With the use of simple and clear words, the Gospel was preached and many came to understand and transformed by Jesus’ love and forgiveness.

Dear Father, thank You for showing to me to be always ready and willing to be a good witness for Christ. Forgive me of my self-centeredness, not seeing the need in others to hear the love and gift of Christ. I pray You will make me more aware of opportunity for sharing and serving; reflecting the light of Christ to others in my words and action. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Spiritual Decompression

Read Mark 1:35-39

"Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." —1 Peter 5:7

Reflection of Tommy:

I heard many times from people that they are so busy that they have no time to pray or spend quiet time with God. But in today's passage, we see how even Jesus himself set aside time to pray to the Father, how much more we need to do the same?

The amazing thing is the more time we spend with Him, the more efficient and equipped we are in handling the stresses and pressures in our lives. He give us rest and peace from our burdens (Mark 1:35-39); strengthen and renew us (Isaiah 40:31) to be ready for the challenges ahead.

Dear Father, thank You that I can cast all my care upon You (1 Peter 5:7). Thank You for your strength to lift me up again when I'm weary and down with the pressures around me. Teach me to have more quality quiet time with You, listening to You and submitting to Your guidance and leading in all things. In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.

The Battle Within

Read Galatians 5:16-23

Reflection of Tommy:

Some fight the desire to do wrong and sin (v19-21) by refraining from thinking about them or actively telling themselves not to do them. If we were to study the human mind, we know that the more we try to control or stop ourselves from doing certain things, the more likely we will end up doing them!

Paul in today's passage showed to us how to combat these sinful thoughts and desires of the flesh by walking in the Spirit, empowering Him to work in us, bearing the good fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me not to just talk but to always willingly and obediently walk in the Spirit. Forgive me at times of my lack of understanding and willingness to follow Christ faithfully, rejecting commands He has taught me and not having a genuine attitude towards repentance. Father, give me a teachable heart and be a true and obedient disciple of Christ, bringing glory and honor to You in everything I do. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

God Weeps With Us

Read Psalm 116

Reflection of Tommy:

Many are unable to accept that there is a heaven and a hell and that God judges and punishes men for sinning against Him. But as I look at the evils in the world, how severely they have hurt and affected those close to me, I know it's unthinkable to have a God who is just but closes one eye and do nothing about them.

God knows and hears all our cries (v1-2), He knows everything we've went through, He will protects and saves us (v6), He will gives us true rest and peace when we call on Him (v4), and ultimately He'll bring justice for all in the end. Instead of allowing ourselves to be trapped with fear, anger, pain and hopelessness towards injustice; we can reach out to our loving Father with a thankful heart for peace, healing and deliverance; trusting in His timing in making things right again. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).

Dear Father, thank You and I praise You for Your steadfast love, compassion and faithfulness. Thank You that we can always take refuge under Your wings and Your faithfulness will be our shield and rampart (Psalm 91:4). Lord, I pray for Your healing power to be upon those who was hurt, wronged and disheartened by men; that they will recover fully, to be renewed once again in body, mind and spirit.

Lord, I pray also that they will forgive their "enemies", to rest all their pain and anger into Your mighty hand. I pray that they will seek and build a closer personal relationship with You, to trust You more each day. Through their experience, I pray that You'll show them how and where that they can minister and reaching out to others. Thank You and I ask all these in Jesus' Name, Amen.

The Tipping Point

Read Romans 12:1-8

“He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.” - Matthew 10:39

Reflection of Tommy:

The idea and thought of surrendering or submitting to someone is scary and daunting when it means we lose control of things we hold and depend on to for security. But as a Christian, we are called to surrender our will and heart to God, submitting to Him (James 4:7), and presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to Him (Romans 12:1). The verse that best describes this complete surrendering can be found in the beautiful paradox of Matthew 10:39.

The Barclay Commentary wrote:
“The Christian may have to sacrifice his personal ambitions, the ease and the comfort that he might have enjoyed, the career that he might have achieved; he may have to lay aside his dreams, to realize that shining things of which he has caught a glimpse are not for him. He will certainly have to sacrifice his will, for no Christian can ever again do what he likes; he must do what Christ likes. In Christianity there is always some cross, for it is the religion of the Cross.

The man who seeks first ease and comfort and security and the fulfillment of personal ambition may well get all these things--but he will not be a happy man; for he was sent into this world to serve God and his fellow-men.The way to serve others, the way to fulfill God's purpose for us, the way to true happiness is to spend life selflessly, for only thus will we find life, here and hereafter.”

Dear Father, thank You for reminding this truth once again; to have Christ sitting on the throne of my life. Search my heart and reveal to me anything that may have taken His place and lead me to surrender it to You and trust You to know what best for me. Guide me through the Spirit as I come to serve Your people with love and selflessness. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Inner Peace

Read Isaiah 53:7-9

"Be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing." —1 Peter 3:8-9

Reflection of Tommy:

I used to be a very reactive and bad-tempered person. Small annoyance and irritation from people can drive me insane! But as I walk closer to God, the Spirit changes me from within to be more Christ-like, helping me to grow and bear more the good fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control - Galatians 5:22-23).

As we read today's passage, we see and learn how Jesus responded to all the insult, accusations and mockery. Instead of retaliate and repaying evil with evil, our Lord display true inner peace by showing mercy and love for His enemies. Through our forgiving attitude, other may see the power and love of Christ in us. Like what the author in the Daily Bread said - "The worst criticism of you can bring out the best of you".

Dear Father, thank You for molding me to be more like Your Son each day. Help me to see Your plan for my life and how I can be used by You in the extension of Your kingdom. Teach me also always remember not to repay evil with evil (Isaiah 53:7-9), insult with insult but to display Jesus' kind, gentle and forgiving attitude to those who are unfair or unkind to me; that they may see Your love and grace in me. In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.

Distressed Travelers

Read Matthew 11:20-30

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." —Matthew 11:28

Reflection of Tommy:

Things in life can at times rob us from the joy and hope God has given us. We become weary and distressed by the uncertainties, anguish, and hurt; that no one seem to ever understand. We question when and what has went wrong. We may even settle to numb and suppress all our feelings to lessen the pain in our heart.

As we read the encouraging promise in today's passage, we know that God understands the things we are going through in our lives. No matter how big or small, how difficult or painful the situation may be, He is there beside us supplying us with strength and grace to sustain through them.

God invites us to come to Him and He will give us true rest (v28). In exchange of our burdens, Jesus offers us His yoke that is easy and light (v30) when we submit and surrender all our care to Him.

Dear Father, thank You for Your gentleness (v29), Your amazing love and grace for me. Forgive me of often forget about the peace and confidence You are offering to me when I truly accept Jesus as the "Lord" of all things in my life. So Lord, I commit and surrender them all to You once again: my work, my relationships and my future.

Lord Jesus, may I walk ever closer and more obediently with You each day; be ready and willing always in empowering the Holy Spirit to work mightily in my life. I thank You and pray in Your Name, Amen.

Fellow Workers

Read 1 Corinthians 3:5-15

Reflection of Tommy:

As friends shared with me how church attendance was droping drastically each year in developed countries, I came to realize that more and more souls are lost and drifting away from God. More and more people are influenced to pursue fulfillment and significance in life through perishable things in the world. During Jesus' earthly ministry, He manifested concern for these lost souls by showing true compassion for them (Matthew 9:35-36). He called on His disciples to pray for laborers (Matthew 9:37-38) and send them to seek out all those who are lost throughout Israel and all over the world.

What of us who are His disciples today? Do we have compassion for the lost? Do we pray for the Lord of harvest to sent out laborers into His harvest? The Lord is still working to save those who are lost and He will provide us the opportunity, the increase, and the reward for His harvest. So, are we ready and willing to share God's Word and be a useful "Fellow Workers" to our Master today?

Dear father, thank You for teaching me that the more I patiently and humbly sow for Your kingdom, the more I will reap (Gal 6:7). Thank You for reminding me that the key to all that I'll build is to be based on the right and only rock-solid foundation: Jesus Christ! Show to me my role Lord in your mighty plan that I may glorify Your Name with all that I do. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

The Heart of the Church

Read 1 Thessalonians 3:6-13

"May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones." - 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13

Reflection of Tommy:

Paul in today's passage tell us clearly that for any ministry to be successful, two characteristics need to be cultivated - love for one another (v12) and holiness (v13). A body of believers can have hundreds of members but yet can be stiffled from being fruitful and with no true changes in the life of its members.

The same is true for those who serve or participate in the works of God. Our works will be futile and doomed for failure if we ourselves does not live a commited, faithful and holy life. If we still couldn't love or forgive those around us, it's impossible for us to be used by God in any areas of His minitry.

Loving Father, thank You for giving me the oppurtunities to serve Your people, not that You need me but because the Spirit working in me to be Your worker in your mighty plan. As I serve, search my heart and reveal to me anything that still sin against You and dishonoring Your holy Name. Lead me to repentance and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Teach me to genuinely love one another and surrender my all to You, living a changed life that is pleasing to You. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.

Special Delivery

Read Romans 16:1-16

Reflection of Tommy:

As I read and hear about stories of people who came to know Christ, I can see the gravity of sin in causing so much hurt and brokenness in this world. But, I can also see the amazing love and redeeming grace of God that make it possible for us all to once again have a new start in Christ; being inwardly transformed and renewed each day while experiencing the hope and healing from our broken past.

As we read in today’s passage how Phoebe had assisted others in delivering God’s Word, we know that as followers of Christ, we are also God’s “spiritual mail carriers”; Christ’s feet and hands. Look around us, and ask the Spirit to show us how and where we too can assist in delivering the Good News by word and deed to those who need its life-giving and changing message.

Dear Father, thank you for making me Your child and for giving me Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for changing me each day to be more like Christ and to surrender my all to Him. Guide me not to keep anything from Him and not to make an idol out of anything or anyone. Lead me to be filled by the Spirit in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Lord Jesus, make me Your feet and hands, Your spiritual mail carrier, that others may know You and come to accept You as their Lord and Savior. In Christ’s name I pray, Amen.

A Good Stretch

Read Romans 8:26-28

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:26

Reflection of Tommy:

In Romans 8:28, Paul clearly stated that God works for our good not only in certain circumstances or incidents in our lives but in “all things”. This means both good and bad things that happened to us.

To fulfill His purpose, God can turn something seemingly bad at the moment to good eventually. This gives us the courage, hope and encouragement to persevere in times of hardship; trusting and relying on God more.

Note also that this eventual good is only for those who truly love and faithful to God; called according to His purpose. These people trust fully in God, knowing their security is in heaven and God is always present with them.

Dear Father, thank You for showing to me how the Spirit can pray with and for me even when I do not know the right words and things to pray. Guide me Lord, never to be anxious of anything, but in everything, by prayers with thanksgiving, presenting my request to You. And Your peace that transcends all understandings will continue guarding my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, Amen.

Heart Knowledge

Read Colossians 1:3-12

Reflection of Tommy:

There is nothing inherently wrong with equipping our selves with biblical knowledge to answer any tough questions from non-believers, but we should be aware of not focusing entirely on accumulating knowledge without developing a close relationship with God and bearing fruit for Him.

We can be busy attending every Bible study classes in church and reading all books on Christianity, but yet never lead to a changed life and right living with God.

God’s Word is never just for our information but it is for our transformation! It should give us direction for living and to put what we have learned into practice by helping and serving others.

Dear Father, thank You for teaching and leading me to build a close relationship with You, to truly live a new and changed life in Christ. May You fill me with the knowledge of Your will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding (v9) and that I would bear fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of You (v10). I thank You and pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Prayer for Strangers

Read Colossians 1:9-14

Reflection of Tommy:

Sometimes, it’s hard to pray for those we do not know or not that well or that we have never met; people like missionaries, leaders, strangers and even enemies. But, as we look at how Paul prayed for the Colossians, who he had never met, in today’s passage, we can learn how to pray for these people:

We can pray that they will..
1. Understand God’s will
2. Gain spiritual wisdom
3. Please and honor God
4. Bear good fruit
5. Grow in the knowledge of God
6. Be strengthen by God
7. Have great endurance and patience
8. Stay full of Christ’s joy
9. Give thanks and praise to God always

Dear Father, thank You for teaching me how to emulate the prayer pattern of Paul to the Colossians today. Lead me to be more Christ-like each day, more other-centered, praying for those in needs and be ready to serve with joy and humility. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

The Good Steward

Read 1 Timothy 6:17-19

Reflection of Tommy:

Dear Father, thank You for making me realized today how much blessings I've received from You and how grateful and thankful I should be compares to many of my friends who are still struggling hard with their work and life. Not only that, You showed to me I should be more hardworking and making good use of the time and other resources You have given to me. Help me to use them well and wisely, always ready to give and willing to share (v18) with those in needs.

Lord, I pray also for Your wisdom to be with me to discern how I can really help, how far I should help and care for others. Lead me not to have selfish or wrong motives when reaching out to others. Guide my mind and heart to trust in You more in all that I do. Thank You and I pray this in Jesus' Name, Amen.

Being Natural

Read Psalm 54

Reflection of Tommy:

If we read today’s Psalm by David, we’ll see how we should approach God more naturally and spontaneously instead of following through an almost forced and ‘scripted’ way and sequence in our prayers. With honesty and true humility, we should come to God without fear to express our true feelings and needs; transitioning them towards praise and thanksgiving.

Dear Father, thank You for being my true and faithful Help, Sustainer (v4) and Deliverer (v7) in all that I have to go through in my life (sorrow; ruthless men –v3; slanderer –v5). I give You praise and all glory and honor to Your Name, O Lord, all the days of my life. Teach me to trust Your power and hold on as You will give me the strength to keep from falling (Isa. 40:31). In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Unchanging Love

Today passage has many good reminders for us; things we often forget as we are too busy with our works and other commitments in life. Firstly, the crown of life in verse 12 is our reward of an eternal life living with God forever. God is reminding us to get ourselves ready, persevere, and staying faithful to Him for all the trial, temptations and hardship lying ahead of us.

Secondly, the reason God allow Satan to tempt us is to refine our faith and to help us grow in dependence on Christ. And, God has promised not to allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). He is teaching us to resist by turning to Him for strength and make the choice to obey His Word.

We are also reminded not to blame others for the wrong decisions we’ve made instead to accept responsible and ask for God forgiveness.

Finally, QUICK TO LISTEN, SLOW TO SPEAK AND SLOW TO BECOME ANGRY (v19).

Dear Father, thank You for leading me in a better path to seek You. Teach me to spend more time reading Your Word, remembering them well and applying them in every aspect of my life. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Putting it into Action

Read James 1:19-27

Reflection of Tommy:

Although reading, studying and listening to God’s Word is important, but it is far more important to really obey it and to do what it says. We put into action what we have learned from God by displaying them in our behavior and attitudes. James also said that when we truly obey and continues to do what God has taught us in His Word, we will be blessed in all that we do (v25).

Dear Father, thank You for teaching me to put into action all that I’ve learned from Your Word. Guide me also to be always in control of my speech (v26), slow to speak but quick to listen (v19). Keep me away from being polluted by the world’s corrupted values but instead to commit myself fully to Christ’s ethical and moral system. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Faithful Till the End

Read Daniel 3:8-20

Reflection of Tommy:

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were threatened to deny God, but they remain faithful to Him despite the terrible consequences they will face. Although they trusted God can deliver them, but they were determined to be faithful whether He intervenes or not.

We would not need faith if God always intervenes and rescued those who true to Him. Thus, we should be faithful to serve God no matters what’s the outcome of our situations. God will supply us with His sustaining grace and strength to persevere and to go through our trials. We’ll realize that our eternal reward is worth any suffering we may endure now.

Dear Father, guard my heart and mind to focus on being obedient and faithful to You till the end. Guide my every action and thoughts; lead me to Your way everlasting. May I seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, and trusting all these things shall be added unto me (Matthew 6:33). In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

My Heart Condemns Me

Read 1 Timothy 1:12-17

Reflection of Tommy:

There are many who feel so guilt-ridden by what they did in their past, that they find it so hard to fully accept God’s forgiveness, even after they have confessed them. Because of this, their memory continues to haunt and overwhelm them; bringing great pain, grief and regret into their lives.

In today’s passage, we see how Paul, who considered himself “the worst” of sinners, who has hunted down and murdered God’s people, know and understood fully God’s grace and mercy for him. Instead of feeling trapped and condemned by his past, Paul in true humility and gratitude, believe God has truly forgive him and allow himself to be used mightily for God’s works.

Dear Father, thank You for Your grace and mercy, to forgive a sinner like me. I humbly submit and offer my life as a living sacrifice to You. Mold and change me to be of better use for the extension of Your kingdom. I praise You O Lord, my only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. In the Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

His Comforting Presence

Read Psalm 139:1-12

Reflection of Tommy:

We sometimes try to ‘hide’ from people; avoiding them from knowing us completely. We fear they may not like about certain things they discover about us. But with our loving God, who knows everything about us, we need not to be afraid because He will still accept and love us completely and faithfully. Not only that, God will be with us always – protecting, loving, guiding, comforting.

And as God’s lovingly and wonderfully made each one of us (v14), we should have as much respect for ourselves as He has for us. Instead of feeling worthless and hating ourselves, we should remember that His Spirit is ready and willing to work within us.

Dear Father, thank You for Your constant and comforting presence with me wherever I am or whatever I do (v7), that I can never be far from You or lost to Your Spirit. Guide me to walk ever closely to You, following all Your precepts and shining brightly the Light of Christ to the world around me. May my words and action bring all glory and honor unto You always. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

More Than We Imagine

Read 1 John 2:28–3:3

"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!" - 1 John 3:1

Reflection of Tommy:

Many today, including Christians, being deceived by Satan into believing that the basis of their worth is their performance and their ability to please others. We seek ways to be masters at “playing the game” to be successful, to win approval of others and to get what we want.

Failing to do so, we experience the pain of disapproval and withdraw into a shell of hurt, misery, numbness or depression. Nothing is clearer than the equation below that reflects Satan’s lie to many of us today:

Self-worth = Performance + Others’ Opinions

But, as we read in 1 John 3:1, we can trust God’s complete acceptance of us as His children (v1), allowing Him to truly free us from our dependency on success and the approval of others. We’ll realize that having a healthy sense of self-esteem and worth doesn’t rely being successful or good at pleasing others.

We know our self-worth has freely and conclusively given to us by God, not men. Therefore, we will have the attitude saying “It would be nice to be approved by so and so, but if they don’t, it’s alrite, I’m still loved and accepted by God!”

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me that the life of a follower of Christ is a process to be more and more like Him (Romans 8:29). Thank You for showing to me that true faith always result in good deeds – consistently do what is right (v28-29).

Father, remind me always that my ultimate destiny is to be like Christ completely when I see Him face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12); motivating me to purify myself to be free from the corruption of sin. Jesus, lead me to Your way, a way to a renewed hope, joy and purpose in my life. In Your Name I pray, Amen.

“That Ain’t It!”

Read Isaiah 55:6-9

"Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near." - Isaiah 55:6

Reflection of Tommy:

Isaiah tells us in today’s passage to seek God when He is near (v6). But often, daily distractions and noises from the world cause us to lose sight of God’s direction and purpose for our lives here.

We allow ourselves to easily drift away and to settle for things that are inferior, perishable and unreliable to what God is offering us. We foolishly think our ways are better and trying hard to fit God into our mold- making His plans and purposes conform to ours.

We should not repeat what the people of Israel did but to strive each God-given day to fit into His plans and purposes for us. Seek God and His truths today; acknowledge that His ways and thoughts are far higher (v9) than ours and begin trusting Him to be in control of all our situations.

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me that Your ways are far greater than anything I can see with my dim eyesight. Teach me to trust You more and to leave all things into Your hands through my prayers. Guide my ways through the Holy Spirit that I will do what You’ve planned for me in this life. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Handle With Care

Read Acts 20:27-32

"I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up." — Acts 20:32

Reflection of Tommy:

Paul cared so much for these believers that he cried over their needs (v31). He called them to be shepherds of the church of God (v28) to be always on guard, protecting themselves and other believers from bad influences around them (v30).

Similarly, we too can build strong relationships with other believers through genuine love, care, concern, sharing and praying with one another. In times of trial and difficulties, we can encourage, comfort and build one another up by giving ourselves away to others in joyful service.

Dear Father, thank You for bringing me in contact with many believers in fellowship; to grow together and responding in love and care with one another. Guard my heart and mind always, seeking Your Word daily and be guided by the Holy Spirit to be a shepherd in leading more people to know You. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Limited But Useful

Read Matthew 25:24-28

Reflection of Tommy:

Like the last servant, many of us tend to think and focus only of our own selves most of the time. And, we give very little of our time, talent, energy and money in service to others. We find excuses to avoid doing what God calls us to do and even if we do serve, we do it unwillingly.

The parable told by Jesus in today’s passage reminds us of obeying God willingly as we claim He is our Master. We are reminded also that all our time, abilities, and money belong to God; that we are caretakers, not owners. Thus, when we ignore, squander or abuse what God has given us, we are rebelling against God and deserve to be punished.

Dear Father, thank You for Your clear reminder that I should be a more faithful and grateful caretaker of all that You have given me. Teach me to be more other-centered in seeking ways to serve Your people. Help me not to be constantly preoccupied by my wants, worries and problems, but to allow the Holy Spirit to work in me to find effective ways to reach out to others in service and love. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Miracle Or Magic?

Read John 10:24-42

"Though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him." —John 10:38

Reflection of Tommy:

There are those who ask for Christ’s proof of divinity, do so for the wrong reasons. We often hear common question like “Why was God and miracles so evident in the Bible, and seems so hidden today?". Like what the Pharisees did in 8:13, many doubters hope to prove Jesus of telling lies or did so for their selfish and perverted gain; instead of trying to search for the truth that Jesus is truly the Son of God.

But, if we look at how God’s words have been miraculously kept for us down through the ages, we know there’s no further need for extra-biblical revelations or miracles to “validate” the Bible. Everything we ever needed “for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16) are found in the Bible.

Secondly, as Christian we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who is certainly not hidden from us but continuously speaks to us daily, teaching us (1 Corinthians 2:3), reminding us of all things that Jesus taught (John 14:26), guiding, correcting, and convicting us of sin (John 16:8).

Finally, God does not give His people a continual chain of miraculous signs (Habakkuk 2:4); He expects us to trust what He has already done, to search the Scriptures daily; respond to the Holy Spirit within, and live by faith, not by sight (Matthew 16:4; John 20:29). One of the best examples of God’s “hidden” working is the book of Esther, in which God is never mentioned, but which plainly shows His sovereign hand at work from beginning to end.

Dear Father, thank You for revealing Your truth, love and grace in my heart. Thank You for the miraculous works and resurrection of Christ that has saved my soul, cleansed and made me whole again; giving me hope of an everlasting life with You. Continue to guide and lead me through the Holy Spirit in Your way everlasting. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Flawed Impressions

Read Joshua 22:10-34

Reflection of Tommy:

Very often we are quick to judge a person by mere first impression they gave to us. By assuming the worst about the intentions of others only brings trouble, misunderstandings and unnecessary conflict.

Like Phinehas in today’s passage who led a delegation to learn the truth, we too need to always seek ways to learn and hear more of the whole story before jumping into conclusions and reacting in the wrong way.

Dear Father, thank You for reminding me not to be quick in judging others but to seek open communication when interacting with others. Forgive me I pray that very often I failed to do that with my intolerant and unloving attitude; being a bad witness for Christ. Teach me to change that and to be more open to listen, learning more about a person or situation in resolving any conflicts that I may have. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

The Right Stuff

Read Galatians 1:6-12

Reflection of Tommy:

In today’s passage, Paul warned the Christians in Galatia of being in the wrong track; denying the sufficiency of Christ’s work on the cross. Similarly, how do we as Christian actually know when a teaching is perverted? How do we identify where the truth of God’s Word is twisted and distorted?

We need to be aware that they will always be people who pervert the Good News by introducing other “ways” for us to be saved. We need to constantly remind ourselves that our salvation is a gift from God and there will be absolutely nothing other than our faith in Christ alone.

Dear Father, thank You for what Christ has done for me on the cross. Teach me to always emphasize on what He has done when sharing the gospel with others. Guide my lip and all my ways that they may bring glory and honor to You. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Whitewater Experiences

Read 1 Chronicles 28:9-20

Reflection of Tommy:

"Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD God—my God—will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you." —1 Chronicles 28:20

I was with some friends this weekend thrashing through forest and crossing streams with ridiculously strong rapid and experience the amazing sight of a huge waterfall. As we were settling down for a swim, I climbed up to this big log that fell across the stream and planning to do a plunge from there into the sandy riverbed below.

It took me awhile before making the jump. A nearby guide advised me to just close my eyes and make the jump. I did and it was so easy, I did another jump instantly after that.

Similarly in today’s passage, David advised Solomon not to be frightened about the size of his task as both king and builder of the temple. Our fear of our tasks at hand, its risks or pressure can easily immobilize us and causing us to do nothing. The remedy to this fear is not to focus on the fear but to fully trust in God and to get to work! Our loving God has promised to always be with us (v20); never fail or forsake us (v21).

Dear Father, thank You that I can be honest and direct with You at all times for You know and understand everything in my heart. Search me, try me and reveal to me any part of my heart that are not right with You, that I may ask for Your forgiveness and to be changed and refined by the power of the Holy Spirit. May my heart be always open to Your molding that I will become a better witness and more obedient follower of Christ. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Sticky Burdens

Read Psalm 32:1-7

Reflection of Tommy:

“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” - Psalm 32:7

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you.” —Psalm 55:22

Most Christians know very well that we need to somehow rest all our burdens and worries to God, but not many truly understand the meaning of doing that. I found a good illustration from a book I recently read. The author described most Christians are like a man who was toiling along the road, bending under a heavy burden. As a car overtook him, the driver kindly offered to help him on his journey. He joyfully accepted the offer, but when seated in the car, he continued to bend beneath his burden, which he still kept on his shoulders!

Like the man, we too often think that it is almost too much to ask God to ‘carry’ us, and could not think of letting Him further carry our burdens too. So we who have given ourselves into the care and keeping of Jesus, often continue bending beneath the weight of our burdens, and often go weary and heavy-laden throughout the whole length of our journey. There are also those who at first fully surrender their burden, only to take them back as soon as they finish praying.

As we read through His Word, we can see how many times God has promised to take care of us when we cast all our burdens to Him. There is no great crisis or 'sticky' burden that He can’t handle for us; thus, we can fully trust Him to sustain and see us through every situation. Instead of worrying and panicking, we should pray and submit all our concerns to Him, and His peace that transcends all human understanding will guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).

God knows our burdens and our crosses,
Those things that hurt, our trials and losses,
He cares for every soul that cries,

Dear Father, thank You that I can present my anxious thoughts to You any time and You faithfully supply me with Your peace and strength in return. Teach me to trust You more in ALL things that through them I can emerge stronger and become a better witness for Christ. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
